Assignment: Write a 2 paged, double spaced, source analysis paper on one assigned primary source. You will find these primary sources from our textbook primary source reader, Worlds of History Volume 1 Sixth edition by Kevin Reilly. I have attached a rubric that covers rules, expectations and includes two successful examples of student submissions.
Citation styling must follow Chicago style citations.
A primary source is a document written in the time period we are studying.
As a reminder, please be objective when you are analyzing the primary source. The goal is to explain what this source tells us about that time period, it is not an assignment that asks you to subjectively judge/compare peoples of the past. Assignments that are not objective will not be given credit.
Requirements:
Reading responses should:
Have direct quotes and citations from the readings
Have an intro, paragraphs, and conclusion
Be two pages, double spaces, size 12pt font
Explain what the reading is about, and why it is important
Employ historical analysis when considering the importance
Have ample analysis of the document, and consider what it means to history
Only cite the course readings
Reading responses should not:
Be written in outline form
Be a summary of the document with no analysis
Include citations from outside sources
Generally speaking, you should be answering most of the following questions:
Who wrote the primary source? When was it written?
What is happening in the source?
Why was the source written? What is the historical context surrounding the source?
Who are the main historical actors involved with the reading?
Why is this source historically significant?
What does this source say about the time it was written in?
