Perception & Observation Exercises /How to see
Please take out your CompBook (or some paper that will become your book) and follow along on our warm-up video to work on our skills-to-use!
Watch : Week 1 Video Observation (5 min) and answer the questions to the best of your ability- It’s not about getting the answers ‘correct’, it’s about showing you that images can be loaded with meaning and a ‘language’ that can be learned. I don’t need to ‘see’ your answers, just tell me how you think you did in your Weekly Report under “CompBook” or you can report here in the weekly video submission. These exercises change each week and are intended to develop your ability to notice things and trends that might get overlooked – a seriously good skill to have!
(do me a solid and label which question you are answering so I can give you the correct points (for example Set #1, Question #2) I can usually figure it out but it makes my responses back to you quicker if I know to which question you are responding!)
set #1 videos
questions for first video:
1)What are your thoughts about the CompBook? Does it sound like busywork crap or do you think it might be meaningful?
2)How did you do on the observation? You don’t have to give me specifics – just your general feeling. It’s okay if you didn’t know much because that is why you are in this class. It’s my job right now to convince you that spending time looking and getting better at observation will benefit you in the long run and is absolutely worth your time.
3)Curiosity Question: What about the exercise made you think? What did you think as you looked at the image? What did you think was kinda-cool or kinda-weird or anything?

1) What your reaction is to the information. What do you think? What was surprising about the info? Did anything make you angry (the price of the firebricks maybe?). What has been your experience with art so far? What were you thinking when you watched the video?
2) Look up more about Anish Kapoor and his reputation (how much is his net worth, why are his neighbors in London pissed with him) Is it okay for artist’s to be assholes? Why or why not? Why would someone go to the Bean in Millennium Park on March 12 and kiss is with bright pink lipstick?
3) Question of your choice: What questions were you asking after watching the videos?
