The mission of education is now to facilitate student instruction more than, teach learning skills. It is to promote modern technology as a part of the curriculum. The mission of education today is also to enrich morals and values for students. The mission also prepares students for the diverse world we live in.
The role of faculty and staff has changed to researching, developing curriculum, planning, and keeping with the university’s educational goals. The area of the curriculum known variously as multiculturalism, diversity studies, or race -gender-class studies became one of the most fascinating areas for review. Faculty demographics shifted quite a bit, with numbers of women entrants increasing markedly. The percentage of faculty working as part-timers increased as well. A move toward modifying definitions of faculty productivity so that the staff would spend more time on teaching and less on research generated much press but was slow in modifying working conditions. Faculty preparation, in-service development, and evaluation standards changed little. Faculty salaries increased throughout the 1970s, dipped in the early 1980s, and turned up again in the 1990s, but overall they hardly kept pace with the rate of inflation. Protected by a lengthy history, court decisions, and state governments that with rare exceptions proved benign, institutions of higher education continued as desirable places of employment, (Cohen, & Kisker, 2009).
