The Course Learning Outcome I have chosen to discuss in this particular discussion post is, Summarize the pathophysiology of various nutrition related diseases. This outcome I felt came naturally to me as I have a passion for cooking, I have taken cooking courses with famous chefs around the world, therefore allowing me to learn about nutrition as time went on. The weekly discussion boards along with our brochure assignment we had to complete this term, all contributed to further meeting the learning outcome we were expected to. Implementing this learning outcome into clinical practice and my personal life would be quite easy in my opinion. This information would be useful when educating patients on how to prevent or further treat diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Using this learning outcome I may be able to advise patients to comply with a specific diet relating to their disease to further help treat or prevent whatever is at hand. I will also be able to implement this learning outcome throughout my day to day life as I can adjust my daily nutrition based on which foods I determine are healthy in preventing diseases later in life. Nurses can implement many different types of evidence-based interventions in a healthcare environment. A few examples of this would be, encouraging patients to consume a healthy diet in regards to their diagnosis, encouraging patients to intake more fluids to provide hydration for their bodies based on their output, referring patients to a nutritionist to further explain specific dietary needs based on their health and medical history, and educating patients throughout their admission in regards to their dietary needs and changes prior to their discharge.

Unfortunately, not many people are aware of nutrition and unaware of the numerous benefits of a healthy diet. A nutrition class can help with this. Even if you eat healthily, there is a lot you can learn about the nutritional characteristics of different foods and how they affect your body. After all, you are what you eat, so being more conscious of what you consume is important.
To start my journey toward a well-balanced diet, I need to ensure that I get all of the nutrients my body needs throughout the day. Protein, carbs, fat, water, vitamins, and minerals must be included in my diet. Reduce my intake of harmful fats, make easy food changes to fulfill “cravings,” and start preparing more of my meals.
I had a diabetes patient on my clinical, and a healthy lifestyle is something we should all strive to maintain, especially those living with diabetes. Staying on track with a good diet and exercise regimen and keeping blood sugar levels regulated are vital for people with diabetes.
Being properly educated about the diet is also imperative. General healthy eating is the top recommendation, especially for individuals with diabetes. People with diabetes are typically told to stay away from carbohydrates because we associate carbs with bread, potatoes, pasta, and rice. Carbs are actually in many healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, which are necessary for a healthy diet. We encouraged and taught our patients to include those types of carbs in their diets (Oklahoma Heart Institute, 2020).
