Complete your literature review using the topic approved by the course faculty. It cannot be a topic used in former graduate classes and should be different from any previous coursework. A literature review examines multiple sources in order to give a foundation for a study or an overview of a specific topic.
There are key elements that you will want to pay attention to as you organize your literature:
The Introduction – which clearly defines the research problem and purpose.
Description of how you searched the literature, how many articles were used from each database, any limiters you used, and how you decided the articles were “keepers”.
Analysis and Synthesis – Evaluate the articles you identify related to the topic and provide a summary of the research on the topic to inform the reader of the “state of the science”.
Organize by themes identified, not by author/article.
Identify relationships and any contradictions/gaps/inconsistencies in the literature.
Conclusion/Summary – Most important/key findings are discussed.
Complete the Research Summary Table (template provided) for the 15 research studies you have chosen and add as an Appendix to your essay.
Article Guidelines:
A total of 15 articles should be used. This includes the 8 that were used for the Annotated Bibliography.
Articles should be recent – no older than 5 years unless you are using a “classic” or “landmark” reference. You should use the textbook for guidance and reference it as well.
Note: These resources should be from SCHOLARLY sources such as Cochrane Library, CINAHL, and MEDLINE.
This paper should be approximately 5-6 pages in length; not including the cover page or reference page(s).
Sample papers are provided.
