Interview Questions
1. Was there a time you messed up and felt like you failed? How did you bounce back?
During my service in the United States Army reserve in 1990, there were moments where I felt that my teamwork skills were lacking and this made me feel like I lost confidence in myself. Teamwork is the most emphasized point in the army and if you don’t fit in well with others it can be a challenge to survive there. I overcame this challenge by working on the relationships with my teammates, which build my courage and we just kept going.
2. How did you learn to embrace risk-taking?
With my experience in the army, you learn to survive by pushing through challenges that are thrown at you. There is no room for second-guessing your choice after proper planning. You learn to analyze situations and from that, you can make informed decisions to minimize the chances of failure.
3. Tell me about a recent business setback. How did you recover?
Though I have a Master in Business Administration, I don’t have first-hand experience with setbacks in businesses. Setbacks can be in many forms still, which can be in the form of health, relationships, and many more. The key to recovering from a setback is to either make a new goal or try a different method to achieve the same goal that you first failed in.
4. Think back to five years ago. Did you envision your career as it is today?
I would say yes, for many years I have been in fields related to health and this led to the increase in the interest in matters related to it. Over the years my research has leaned towards the health informatics or technology fields that affect and can improve health care.
5. Was there ever a role you applied for and landed, but weren’t 100% qualified to do? How did you proceed?
My current occupation as a Health Information Technology Research Administrator/ Researcher was a huge leap in my career and a challenge I had to take for myself. This was majorly supported by my experience in administration that I have gathered over the years and followed by my growing interest in health informatics. You have to have strong points that support you getting that role and just go for it.
6. What do you wish you had known before taking your first management role?
That emotional intelligence played such an important role in managing and communicating with others. This is a skill one needs to gain to effectively overcome challenges that one faces.
7. Which leadership skills were the most difficult to develop?
This will be related to emotional intelligence. To consistently and positively handle difficult situations that arise at all times, is not easy. One needs to properly handle their own emotions well to intelligently manage others.
8. Can you tell me about a time when you had a difficult boss? How did you handle the situation?
From an early time of being in the army, you deal with difficult bosses. I am lucky to have experienced that and this enabled me to gain a thick skin, you can say. I have always understood my responsibilities and doing everything better than expected has always helped me avoid those unnecessary situations.
9. How can I stay connected to key influencers who do not work in the same office or geographical area?
The way to connect is by either having a good reason to be able to contact the key influencer or when you’re provided with a good opportunity that you can use to create a professional relationship with them by sharing the same interests.
