The British Empire
The story of British literature is also a story of what is not written. It is a story of what has been preserved… and what has not been preserved. British literature is unquestionably the literature of an empire, as we have discussed with our exploration of what constitutes the literary cannon. With this empire comes the cultures and peoples who were subsumed into the ever-expanding Empire of Britain.
For this assignment, I would like for you to begin by researching one of the groups of people eventually conquered by the British.
You should Email your preference to your instructor so that we can have a variety of projects. Once you have determined which group you will research, and received instructor approval, begin formulating your presentation.
Your goal will be to find a document or piece of artwork by this group of people and present it to the rest of the class.
Explain the item and showcase what it teaches about this group. We’re trying to answer the question “Who is this?”
Give context to this text, drawing, or artifact. Where did it originate? What do we know about its author?
You should also include in your presentation a map, explaining where this group lives/lived.
Explain what happened to the group after the British Empire expanded over their area.
You are welcome to use online sources. Look for national museums, libraries, and archives for information.
Present your findings using a forum such as Canva, Prezi, or PowerPoint!
