We want to take a slightly deeper dive into the 19th century with some directed research.
We are going to use photographs as our starting point for your research. This is a common problem or task (not just for historians) in how to interpret and contextualize images that often are of unidentified subjects.
To complete this assignment:
First: Choose one of these images to research: Please view the screen shot in the files box for the image.
Second: Formulate some key terms to research that you think will provide more insight into the photograph you’ve chosen.
You may use:

Oxford Reference Online
Britannica Academic
Using ONLY the databases listed research your chosen topics.
Fourth: Write up your summarized research.
Your roughly 1 page (400-ish words) research summary should:
Describe the photograph you chose from the slide show.
Discuss what aspect of the photograph you decided to research
Provide SUMMARIZED (not quoted) information that you learned from your research.
Explain how the information from your research helps us contextualize the photograph.
Fifth: Verify your work by providing BOTH in-text references to your research sources AND a full citation for the article(s) using either MLA or Chicago.
Sixth: Check your writing before submitting. Your writing should reflect college level vocabulary and all standard writing conventions. You do not have to adhere to a 3rd person voice in the paper, but you should be otherwise professional in your description and summary.
The professor will look for:
How well you follow the guidelines in summarizing your article
Whether you utilized the correct databases (use of ANY outside databases or websites is an automatic zero as it does not fulfill the purpose of this project)
Whether you used appropriate language and style for a college class
If you’ve demonstrated engagement with your chosen photograph (using a photograph that isn’t in the slide show above will result in a non-passing grade)
(Usage of direct quotes or any illicit appropriation of the authors language will result in either a greatly reduced score or an automatic non-passing grade)
