The COVID-19 world pandemic impacted business in new and unusual ways. Now companies are more likely to organize business functions to serve the current and future needs of the company, employees, and the marketplace, instead of maintaining the traditional organizational structure. For example, consider Meister and Brown’s (2020) 21 HR Jobs of the Future and the implications that these new careers have on organizations and how they are structured. We can see these transformations taking place with job titles such as “Human Bias Officer” and “Climate Change Response Leader.”
Human resources, accounting and finance, sales and marketing, production and operations, and information technology (IT) systems are some examples of traditional business functions commonly found in an organization. Functional areas vary within organizations, depending on their focus and purpose. Each area contributes in different ways to make sure the organizations reach their objectives and achieve effectiveness and efficiency.
In today’s business environment, most successful leaders view organizational structures and functions as fluid. Frequent restructuring is viewed as a primary means to keep the company competitive and responsive to the ever-changing marketplace.

Scenario
You have been hired by a medium-sized company called GenaTech that designs and sells innovative medical devices. GenaTech invests in its employees by providing new employees with a well-rounded view of the company in their first year of employment. As a new employee, you will be able to select three functional areas within the company for which you would like to intern for three months each.
