Most Americans agree that liberty and freedom are two great principles that are fundamental to our nation. In the selections that you are about to read, the author finds that liberty and freedom are two varying ideas and are also form when intertwined strand that runs to the core of American life. What David Hackett Fisher examines here is not academic or political ideology, but the folkways that are deeply embedded in American life: what Alexis de Tocqueville called, “the habits of the heart.” The word of liberty is derived from a latin word meaning separation and independence. In its root, freedom means rights of belonging in a community of free people. The tension between these two concepts has been the source of conflict and creativity throughout American history and especially in the era of our study.
