Please discuss one of the following prompts in well-thought out and well-organized paragraphs. (800-word min.)
Note that all Papers are due on Monday, July 26th because despite my promise to change the due date to Tuesday, July 27th, I’ve since found out that grades are due on the 29th, and we need time to read and evaluate the papers and calculate grades.
1. Discuss the relations of power within the Cassini Division with specific examples and quotes, and analyze and evaluate them.
2. Describe the Jovians/Outwarders. Do you think they pose a threat to the Solar Union? Why or why not (or some of each)?
3. The role of history, legacy, and ancestry looms large in The Cassini Division. In Chapter 7, the Jovians repudiate their past hostilities as the equivalent of adolescent mistakes. Ellen, however, argues the given their long time span that equates with a short human one, why would they not “later” deny and dismiss their “present” promises (made in the contact communication) as immature and therefore invalid. “If the Jovians continue to develop, …then they or their descendants could soon be as far beyond their present selves as they are now beyond their past” (181).
4. Evaluate the use and role of gender in the novel. Makes sure you discuss several specific scenes, and use quotes to support your argument.
5. Compare the ending of The Cassini Division with that of Androids? Explore the points of commonality. Put another way, how are Ellen and Rick undergo transformations and changes of their attitudes toward machines/androids and appreciating “winks of laser in the void” and the fact that electric things have their lives too?
