Scenario 3 (to be addressed by Group 3)Deonte Coleman (pronouns: he/him/his) is a new Nurse Manager on the oncology unit of a hospital in a medium-sized, economically depressed city. He recently took a course on leadership at UWT and is eager to try out some of the ideas he learned to support the needs of his unit.
He thinks that his nurses are burned out, in part because they have been feeling oppressed and dis-empowered by the hospital, which is part of a chain of hospitals based in another state. To empower them and to increase morale on the unit, Deonte wants to begin a shared governance model. Deonte’s Assistant Manager, Kenrick Boyega (pronouns: he/him/his), is not so sure that this is a good idea. During a meeting with Deonte, Kenrick says that his impression of the staff is that they are apathetic and do not really want to participate in shared governance – instead Kenrick feels that the staff would think if shared governance is just “another gimmick” to make them work more hours.
Deonte is unsure how to move forward with his idea for implementing a shared governance model.
