Should Americans be fined for not buying or having health insurance? There is no law or rule that you will be penalized for not having health insurance, however, this does come with risks. The primary risk of not having health insurance is a financial burden to you and/or your family. Some other risk of not having health insurance that you may face would be the steep cost of health care. You may be charged more for your care than if you would have had health insurance that may have been covered under your plan. Another risk would be paying off the cost of health care that you will accrual, which will start adding up and may have a difficult time paying off the debts. If you don’t have health insurance, you may be putting your own health and your family’s health in jeopardy. If your health or family members health is failing and you don’t seek health care due to not having health insurance, this may result in many more health conditions including making your health worse over time. If you do seek out care for your health condition, and the treatment is to take prescription medications, without having insurance this may be a very hefty cost, especially with the rising cost of prescription drugs. Many people may delay or not purchase the needed treatment that is needed due the cost of the prescription.
So, with my key points, why would someone go uninsured? The big reason is financial strain. The main reason they go without insurance may be because of the cost of health insurance, which is always rising, and the care or inclusions are decreasing. Another reason is if the individual is unemployed or lost their jobs or even changed their employment. There are also many reasons why individuals go uninsured.
How can you afford health care coverage? According to the Affordable Care Act you may qualify health insurance depending on the qualifications. There is government help for those that are not insured, however, you will need to qualify for the programs.
In closing, I do not think anyone should be penalized for not having health insurance, you may never know what the person has been through. I do think it is very important to make sure you and/or your family are covered by some type of health insurance due to the everyday rising costs.
