General Biochemistry Project WRITTEN ON GLUCOSE Purpose: To have students research deeper into a specific molecule within one of the broader macromolecule classes discussed in biochemistry. The project should reflect on the chemistry that makes the specific molecule biologically relevant. Topic: Choose a specific molecule from one of the macromolecules discussed this semester. The molecule should have a biological function. It should be from one of the classes of compounds covered by biochemistry, protein, carbohydrates, lipids, or nucleic acids. Create a project that discussed this compound in detail, including its chemistry and its biological relevance. The project can take the form of a paper or other creative format. All projects must meet all of the requirements outlined regardless of format. Content Requirements: • Paper or project must include the name of the compound covered. • Structure of the compound in bond line or diagram (source must be cited). • All specific biological function(s) of structure described. • How the compound synthesized or sourced biologically • Specifics on how the chemistry of the compound relates to its function. Must include any binding interactions and properties and their chemical source. • Relate how the molecule is interesting or relevant. • History of the molecule. This may include how humans discovered it, how it has been used, how was its structure determined. Format Requirements: • ACS format for citations and references. Must include internal citations, and citations for any figures, pictures, graphics, or tables included. • A minimum of 3 references (not including Wikipedia) • Length must be 1,000 -1,250-word paper or project. • Presentations must have voice over narration. Videos • If a presentation, podcast, video, or other creative project is created the student must upload a script to be reviewed and all requirements must be meet. • Submission to TurnItIn for plagiarism check is required. Any paper with more than 35% plagiarism score or large copied portions will not receive points. This does not include references. • Correct spelling and grammar should be used. • Content should be written at a college level. Information must be written in own words, no quotations, and not in bullet points.
