For the Lakota Sioux tribes, there was no Judgement Day to sort out the sinners from the saints, no Divine Overseer to offer them comfort in the afterlife; in fact, humans were often left with the responsibility to finish what their gods and spirits began. This is very different from the viewpoint of many Western cultures—for example, Egyptian mythology (where one’s heart is weighed against a feather to determine one’s place in the afterlife), Norse mythology (those who die in battle go to live in Valhalla to prepare for the great fight at the end of the world; the rest sit in boredom for eternity), and Christianity (where God will one day separate the wicked from the righteous). How are the cultural values and worldviews of the Lakota Sioux and Western culture (specifically US culture) different?
