Grecia’s Post:
Interprofessional collaboration is a paradigm that has helped solve many issues in the healthcare industry. The healthcare industry has in the past been facing challenges of medical errors, which arise due to poor communication and collaboration between healthcare professionals. A patient interacts with many healthcare professionals when they visit a healthcare facility, from reception to the pharmacy. A good example is a pregnant mother, who interacts with their physician, a diet expert, a lab technician, and even a pharmacist. The healthcare professionals mentioned above must collaborate to ensure the safety and well-being of the pregnant mother.
Interprofessional collaboration is associated with a range of benefits, which include the reduction of medical errors. In some cases, a healthcare physician might misdiagnose a patient, maybe due to inadequate information and inepteness (Goldsberry, 2018). However, due to the interaction with many healthcare professionals, this error can be detected and corrected early enough through patient records. Additionally, interprofessional collaboration can enhance the improvement of patient outcomes. Through collaboration, healthcare professionals will attend to patients on time, and they will make accurate patient diagnosis. Finally, through interprofessional collaboration, patient safety will be ensured for example through the reduction of HAIs, and cases of duplication of care (Goldsberry, 2018).
Emerging Trends
Nurses are referred to as primary caregivers, because they interact the most with patients. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the role of nurses has shifted to the diagnosis and management of patient conditions. Courtnay et al (2020) shows that ever since the pandemic began, nurses have started functioning as AMS professionals. This means that they have to reinforce antimicrobial use, especially through health promotion initiatives. Nevertheless, nurses must undergo efficient training, and this can be ensured through interprofessional collaboration.
