You are an intern in a community mental health center in a large urban area where significant number of the people are living in poverty. You are assigned by your supervisor a family of a single mother and her 4-year-old male son for initial assessment. The son is presenting as hyperactive and shows some slowness in development that is age appropriate. In initial home visit you notice that the child is eating pieces of paint from the wall and the back of the closet. The mother is trying to control it but he is still able to find corners where he can do so.
