In 150 words, substantively respond to Valantine’s post below by offering different examples of how the nursing shortage has been addressed in your state, community, or specialty area. Valantine’s Post:
The United States is facing significant shortage in the nursing profession as there are insufficient number of nurses to take on roles at all levels of care. One of those factors contributing to the nursing shortage is that the majority of working nurses are getting to retirement age (Whitney, 2018). This factor in combination with an increase in patient acuity, lack of nursing school’s capacity, and the high levels of nursing turnover due to insufficient staffing are causing a great imbalance between the patient in need od care and qualified staff to care for these patients.
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and States have shared some ways that they have implemented in an effort to prevent a nursing shortage. For example, the AACN shared how Wisconsin is projected to have a nursing shortage of 20,000 by the year 2035. To curb this shortage, they initiated a fund of $3.2 million dollars to offer fellowships and loan forgiveness to nursing students who would agree to teach after they graduated (AACN, 2020). This type of plan encourages nurses to continue their education to a master program while also retaining nursing instructors to teach future nursing students. This plan is great in my opinion because it encourages the students to help prevent the shortage by seeing the strain and need for faculty members, but this can only do so much if schools are able to obtain clinical placements for those students.
