6) Identify 2 or 3 potential job ads for which you can develop a resume and job cover letter.
You will not have to actually apply for one of these jobs (unless you want to). However, it’s beneficial for you to identify potential jobs that would fit within your professional interests. Consider jobs that you might apply for if you were graduating with your degree now. For our assignment purposes, it’s best to focus on potential jobs that would require resumes and cover letters. Consider professional career jobs that seek candidates with college degrees and even work experience.
Now that you’ve identified possible jobs to which you might apply, select one for which you can develop a resume and cover letter. You’ll need to complete an analysis of the audience (the employer) and the purpose (how you fulfill the specific job description and expectations). Then you’ll compose an application packet as described below.
Here’s what you’ll turn in:
1) A written analysis of the audience, in which you describe who they are, what they want, and how you can meet their needs. Look back at pages 8 and 44 in our textbook for audience-related factors to consider. Your audience analysis can be an informal document, but you must demonstrate that you’ve analyzed specific characteristics of this audience and how you will present yourself in order to appeal to the audience. For this analysis, you need to prepare an analysis with the following information:
a) At least 3-5 specific details about the audience. Ask questions along these lines, “Who are they? What do they do specifically? How are they unique or different from others in the same field? How are they similar to others? What do they want from the job and from applicants?”
b) Specifically develop 3-5 corresponding attributes that demonstrate how you meet the needs of this job. Be specific and explain how your experience and skills qualify you for this job.
2) A cover letter in which you introduce yourself, indicate why you are applying for this job, and explain how you meet the job needs. Be sure that you identify specific aspects of the job and relate specific aspects of your skills and experience. Remember that a cover letter should be concise and specific.
3) Your resume
4) A copy of the job posting to which you’re “applying”
