Images:
This time, you choose the images! Please choose two images to compare to discuss one of the significant themes below. Your images should be key works and should come from different cultures. Identify both images/monuments fully either at the top of your essay or the first time you mention them, including name/date/culture and period/artist or architect, if known. This is the final essay of the term, so choose your images carefully to demonstrate deep mastery of the material we’ve covered. You are welcome to bring in additional images in your discussion (I encourage you to do so!) but the thesis and main ideas should come from the two primary images, just as our two previous comparative writing assignments have done.
Instructions:
We’ve covered a lot of places and a tremendous time span in this 5-week term. You may have noticed a few important themes about why art was made and how it was used emerge throughout our discussions. Please choose one of the following themes for your final course essay:
Option 1: Art and/or architecture to express power and authority
Option 2: Art and/or architecture to serve the dead
Option 3: Art and/or architecture to express religious beliefs Option 4: Art and/or architectural innovations of technology
Then, think broadly about the theme you’ve chosen and how it runs through the various cultures and periods we’ve discussed. Construct a thesis statement that considers the significance of this theme in art and architecture, and how it emerges in the art and/or architecture of two different cultures, periods, and/or places. In your essay, discuss the theme and consider how it is developed or expressed through examinations of two images (all key works, of your choice, from different cultures/periods). Use the body of your essay to support your statement, including details about the two works and relating your observations to the cultures that created them. Make sure to describe, analyze, and interpret the works of art and relate them to your overarching thesis statement; do not just make a list of monuments. Do not just compare/contrast visually, but delve into why each looks the way it does, drawing out similarities and differences between cultures and belief systems, values, and worldviews more broadly. This is the final essay of the semester and a very open prompt, so be sure to demonstrate mastery of both objects and ideas that we’ve covered. Include as many details as possible to show your deep understanding of the theme and the monuments you discuss.
