24SU LMOL 603 Org Research, Analysis & Prob Solv (01)
Dialogue 1:
Compare/critique strengths and weaknesses or characteristics of quantitative and qualitative approaches to organizational research such as intercultural studies or leadership across cultures. Cite some related specific studies as examples.
Discuss the importance of ethical research and its characteristics.
Example of a Post!
Creswell & Creswell (2023) provide definitions for qualitative research and quantitative research as follows:
Qualitative research provides a method that allows exploration and comprehension of the meaning individuals or groups attribute to a social or human challenge. This process uses questions and procedures that typically occur from collecting data gathered in a participant environment, analyzing that data, and building themes and interpretations by the researcher.
Quantitative research provides a method that tests objective theories by examining the relationship of various components or group comparisons. The different components or variables allow for measurement, usually on instruments, enabling analysis of the numbered data using statistics.
Qualitative generally allows for a more flexible structure from the analysis stage, including the final written report-out stage. An inductive inquiry style builds from gathering information to creating themes to focus on individual understanding and emphasizes the importance of accurately reporting complex situations. (Creswell & Creswell, 2023)
Quantitative research uses a set structure for the final written report, which includes an introduction, methods, results, and discussion. Researchers test theories and build protection in their studies against bias and controls for the consideration of counter alternatives. (Creswell & Creswell, 2023)
Both qualitative and quantitative provide research methods to gather data, analyze, and make meaningful interpretations. Researchers should not view one method as better than the other. “They represent different ends on a continuum” (Creswell & Guetterman, 2018; Newman & Benz, 1998). Perhaps a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods, referred to as mixed methods, provides the correct elements in the middle, using both methods to balance. Of course, the organization under study influences whether one style or a mixed-method approach could produce the best results.
Business ethics includes an organization’s principles, values, and norms originating from the organization’s employees, organizational statements, and legal systems guiding individuals and organizational business behavior. (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2022, 2019) Since we understand ethics to represent the behaviors and decisions made within the organization’s values or morals, research conducted must conform to that organization’s established business ethics.
