2-page Critical Response Papers
Writing a critical response paper requires that you analyze and evaluate the materials you read
for the week and sharing your insights, opinions and reactions to the central ideas and
arguments posed by the author(s). To write an effective 2-page response paper, please be
mindful of this process:
1. Read carefully. Engage with the source many times, taking notes and highlighting key
themes or ideas. The goal is to gain a deep insight into the arguments and evidence
presented by the author.
2. Begin your papers with an opening that engages the reader while providing an
introduction and context for the source that you are responding to.
3. Organize the body of your paper into paragraphs that clearly identify a key concept with
supporting evidence. As you integrate evidence into your paper, determine whether
paraphrasing or directly quoting your source is more effective and efficient. Remember
that you only have 2 pages, so long quotes may not be effective.
4. Approach the source(s) critically. Discuss the strength and weaknesses of the argument
and evidence provided. Address aspects that resonated with you and those that may
have raised questions or concerns.
5. Ensure that you have reflected on the significance of this piece and your analysis. It will
benefit you to consider the broader implications of the source for your internship and
career goals.
6. Edit and proofread your paper before submission. Revise it for clarity, coherence and
grammar. Check for errors in spelling, punctuation and sentence structure. Make sure
that your ideas flow logically and that your critical response is well articulated.
7. Stay within the page limit. Writing a 2-page critical reflection requires succinct thinking
and writing. You must prioritize your most important points.
8. Format your paper with APA citations. Make sure to include proper in-text citations for
any quotes or references that you use. You must also cite when you paraphrase or
engage with another author’s ideas.
9. Review these instructions to ensure you have met the requirements of the paper. Then
finalize and submit via Brightspace.
Remember that a critical response paper should showcase your thoughtful engagement with
