1. You will write
one final formal paper
. This paper will consist of a message analysis
and evaluation of a series of related speech texts, which you select for study throughout the term.
Your choice of speeches for the term project should be guided by your own background and
interest in the messages, the evidence that a community of individuals has regarded each speech
as a significant statement on human rights, and the availability of research materials about the
author, type of message, and audience(s). The formal paper should focus on the concepts and
broad themes from this class. The formal paper should be thoroughly documented with endnotes
and a bibliography in keeping with the most recent edition of The Chicago Manual of Style or
the MLA Handbook. The length of the final paper will be about 12-15 pages. The final paper
will contribute to 25% of the final evaluation.

Preparation for the final paper unfolds through incremental steps identified in bold print
and detailed on the syllabus, including an initial project description and a written proposal for
the project with a preliminary bibliography. In addition, preparation for the final paper entails
revision of two preliminary papers which become the basis for the final paper. This approach
reflects my commitment to engaging in writing as a process with time for reflection on my
advice to you and revision of initial efforts. Even though I write in Word Perfect, I use Word
