1. You will write about the Architecture, Angkor Wat, Central Temple Complex, Cambodia, c. 1113–1150 CE.
2. Write a research visual analysis essay that addresses the artwork as a visual object within the historical context is was created.
In this process, you will incorporate some of the ideas presented in the first half of the course. 
This includes (but is not limited to) ideas regarding: formal analysis, thematic content, function and historical context.
This paper will be 3-4 pages in length.

The topic of your paper must be a work of architecture selected from  chapters 1-7  of your textbook. (already chosen below)
– Angkor Wat, Central Temple Complex, Cambodia, c. 1113–1150 CE.
Your essay will explain the meaning and function of the building you select through visual analysis and historical context.
Therefore, the essay should be both descriptive and analytical of the architectural structure you select. 
Hint: Break it down into three steps: (follow these steps, do not stray. Each step should be for a page to make it easier)
1. Function: Was purpose does it serve (page 1)
2. The Historical Context (when was it created? what aspects of the design relate to the time period it was created? (page 2)
This might include materials, technology, knowledge
And/or Design influences related to cultural time period and region
3. Reading the  Iconography (page 3)
Decoding any symbolic imagery from sculpture to mosaic to the very design of the building
Tip 1: Remember a visual analysis is not just description, the essay should address describe the historical context of the work, even if it is a contemporary example.
Tip 2: Use the vocabulary of art and architecture we have learned so far in this class!
Required Number of RESOURCES: You should have at least three (3) resources in addition to the textbook or class pdfs.
For example: books, online essays, museum lectures, which you refer to in the paper in support of the description of the object and/or its content. 
Required Number of CITATIONS: Your paper should include at least seven (7) citations, meaning quotes (direct or paraphrased) from your resources that you provide citations for, in Chicago Manual of Style. 
These quotes should be used in support of the description and analysis of the object and/or its content. Remember paraphrased information also requires citations.
NOTES ON CITATIONS/QUOTES:
Direct quotes: Information is copied word-for-word from the original source and marked with “quotation marks” in your essay.
“The direct quote is followed with a superscript footnote”1 and footnote in Chicago Manual of Style.
Paraphrased quotes: Information is rephrased in  your own words from the original source and used without quotation marks in your essay.
This is followed with  a superscript footnote2 and footnote in Chicago Manual of Style.
Block quotes: any direct quote that runs, in total length, over 3 lines of text requires special formatting
Format: single space and indented one tab on the left and right
Limit: Do not use more than 2 block quotes for this essay.
Do not exceed 30% of your essay with direct quotes.
A citation in Chicago Manual of Style is required every time you use the words or information from sources in your paper.
