1. Write a 6-page paper in which you discuss YOUR idea of a fair economy. A cover sheet is not necessary but if you use one, it does not count as one of your six pages. You may use outside sources. However, you should concentrate on course material. It will provide you with necessary material to draw from when writing your paper. You will include a bibliography of sources that you used including those from class. This does not count as one of your six pages. 2. Discuss aspects of their economy including ownership, production (how things get made including working conditions), distribution (who gets what, how and when) and consumption, workplace organization, wages and other work issues, energy sources and resources used to fuel economy, and scale of the economy (size) among many other things. 3. Include 15 concepts from course texts and discussions. It is important that you identify these ideas and cite the texts properly with parenthetical citations. For example: The authors write that “through their pension funds and savings programs, workers own substantial wealth in this country” (Collins and Yeskel, 156). This citation style shows the reader that the quote came from the book by authors Collins and Yeskel and can be found on page 156. The word in bold indicates that it is a concept that came from our class readings and discussions. In the bibliography you will write: Collins, Chuck and Felice Yeskel. 2005. Economic Apartheid in America: A Primer on Economic Inequality and Insecurity. New York: The New Press. 4. In your description of an ideal economy, address the following questions: a. What is the goal of the economy? What do you mean by ‘fair?’ What principles determine fairness? How does your economy maintain those principles? How does your fair economy compare to capitalism, anarchism social organization or Indigenous lifeways? b. Who owns the means of production? Who owns the product of labor? Who owns the land? c. Who works? How is work compensated? What are work conditions like? d. What things are produced? Where do materials come from? How is that determined? How are things distributed? How are necessities of life including housing, food, water and health care distributed? e. What energy source is used to produce, distribute, and consume? How are energy sources acquired? f. Are there classes or inequality? Why or why not? g. How are decisions about the economy and other aspects of life made?
