1) Trace the history of the relationship between British colonists and Native Am

April 5, 2024

1) Trace the history of the relationship between British colonists and Native Americans from 1584 to 1700. Were colonists in conflict with Native Americans, or did they have a more cooperative relationship? How did the relationship change over time? What was the result of that relationship by 1700? Support your response with specific examples.
2)Clearly identify and explain the significance of ONLY FIVE (5) of the following:
1) Mercantilism 2) Walter Ralegh 3) Powhatan 4) The Salem Witch Trials 5) William Penn 6) Bacon’s Rebellion 7) Triangular Trade
Essays will likewise be scored according to the following criteria. A score of 45-50 on
the essay indicates that the response was exceptional, or an “A” essay. Responses in the 45-50
range demonstrate clear use of all possible multiple sources in creating the essay (material from
lecture, text, assigned essays, and documents), a clear line of argument, the absence of personal
opinion, excellent critical thinking, and covers all general bases of the subject with substantial
supporting details from course material. An exceptional essay will have no marked inaccuracies.
A score of 40-44 indicates that the essay falls into the above-average or “B” range. This essay
has some indication that multiple sources, or most possible available sources from course
material, have been used in writing the essay, a sufficient line of argument, the absence of
personal opinion, good critical thinking, and covers all general bases of the subject with
sufficient, but not extensive, supporting details. There might be one or two minor inaccuracies. A
score of 35-39 indicates that the essay falls into the “C” or average range. An essay constitutes
average work if the student has employed an insufficient amount of course material as sources,
does not offer a clear line of argument, possibly interjects personal opinion, employs little critical
thinking, and covers some general bases of the subject with a bare minimum of supporting
details, with many crucial details missing. There might be several inaccuracies. An essay is
below average, or in the “D” range, if there is no coherent argument, uses only one source poorly
(usually when the student misinterprets the source), is perhaps a matter of personal opinion
rather than an argument based on documentary evidence, no critical thinking, has significant
inaccuracies, and barely scratches the surface of the subject in any substantive way. Responses
that cover one or two minor details, or touch on one general base, usually fall into the below-
average category. Essays that fail to address the subject in any meaningful, coherent, or
substantive manner fall into the failing or “F” range. Students who attempt to make up a
response that is not based on any of the course material (often because they have not attended
class, nor have they accomplished assigned reading), fail. “F” responses range from students who
have not used any course material in writing their essay response to students who have very
poorly employed only one source by severely misinterpreting that source. “F” essays have failed
to sufficiently meet any of the objectives of the exam. They often demonstrate no critical
thinking, contain overt statements of personal opinion, contain serious inaccuracies, and fail to
provide any real supporting detail or successfully cover a single general base of the subject.
As a final note on scoring, students should bear in mind that attempting to attribute
information to a source other than its origin will not meet the requirements listed above. For
example, students will often write, “it says in the book,” or “it says in the text,” and then provide
7
information that clearly came from lecture. Any information preceded by the above terms might
be disregarded if the student makes a blatant attempt to cite information from the wrong source
to make it appear as though s/he has done the reading when s/he has not
