In order to successfully lead a group and for the members to reach benefit, there has to be an understanding on the goals of the group as well as the individual members of the group. For example, I foresee myself in the future facilitating Intensive Outpatient groups (IOP). Within the group, there will be an understood goal of working together to find the tools and use the tools necessary to stay sober. The early stages of recovery focus on abstinence, stabilization, and learning the skills necessary to stay alive (Corey, Corey, & Corey, 2018). As a counselor and facilitator of a group of individuals new to recovery, I know that the longer someone is abstinent, the more likely they are to be building the foundation to remain sober. The longer they are in recovery the less likely they are to relapse, have housing problems, be involved in crime and are more likely to work toward employment and education (Martinelli et al., 2020). However, within the group, each individual will have their own personal goals that they are working toward and obstacles that they are up against in order to reach them. As the leader it is necessary to keep these in mind during the process in order to help them as best as possible.

Understanding the composition of a group, such as its size, diversity, and roles, is crucial for decision-making as it helps tailor exercises to meet the group’s specific needs. Conflict management involves recognizing potential conflicts and power dynamics to implement proactive resolution strategies. Identifying dominant or emergent leaders is essential for exercise design as it informs leadership styles within the group. Social norms play a significant role in decision-making, and it is important to align decisions with the group’s norms(Tasca, 2020) . Communication patterns, including how information is exchanged, ideas are expressed, and members listen to one another, are vital for effective decision-making. Utilizing exercises that promote clear communication, such as role-playing and active listening, is key. Incorporating both verbal and nonverbal communication, as well as exercises that encourage constructive feedback and active dialogue, is essential for successful decision-making processes.

The Christian worldview is based on beliefs and principles from the Bible. Knowing this can help meet a group’s needs. It focuses on love, compassion, and empathy. Understanding this can lead to kindness and support, especially in tough times. Having a caring heart allows for genuine care. Jesus showed servant leadership, stressing humility and selflessness (The Gospel Project, 2021) . Leaders who follow this put others first. This can build trust and community. Christian ethics come from biblical principles. Knowing these can guide ethical decisions. Leaders can turn to Scripture for wisdom in moral dilemmas. Everyone’s view of the Christian worldview may differ, but these principles can help meet any group’s needs with compassion, integrity, and grace.
