Case: Timothy is a 23-year-old multi-racial male who has recently graduated from college. He is currently working in a warehouse, but he has goals of using his business degree in the workforce. He is coming to
counseling with complaints of difficulty sleeping and feeling apathetic about many things that used to excite him. He shared that he finds himself experiencing anxiety when speaking to potential employers or others he describes as having “power” over his career. Timothy stated he drinks occasionally, but he does not drink more than two to three drinks a couple of times a week. He said the drinking does take the “edge” off the anxiety. Timothy reported he is a good employee and is organized.
Timothy reported his father experienced alcoholism and died in car accident while driving drunk when Timothy was 17-years-old. Timothy reported his childhood was rocky and that his father would hit him when he was drunk. He admitted he struggles with the death of his father as things were not on good terms when his father passed. Timothy reported he was an average student otherwise, and he played football during his youth. He stated he got into a flag football team briefly during college, but he enjoyed his fraternity and drawing in his free time. He said he was good at art. He mentioned he misses his fraternity brothers.
Timothy reported he was briefly hospitalized as a young teen for suicidal ideation, and he had been sad up until college. He said he has an “okay” relationship with his mother, but he admitted he was angry toward her for staying with his father and not helping him during the abuse. Timothy said he was afraid he would not “amount to anything” and that his anxiety would only worsen and get in the way of jobs and him meeting new friends.
Timothy reported his goal is “to get a good job and not feel so sad or worried.”
