1. Listed below are some questions that you should consider when writing the paper.  All questions may not apply to your assigned article.  
2. Please review Chapter 15 and the “Questions to Consider When Appraising Qualitative Nursing Studies” on p. 461 (Box 15-3) in your textbook. 
3. Completing the CASP checklist first will help you write the paper and answer the questions below providing an appropriate appraisal of the study.
4. All required forms are included at the bottom of this page. There is a paper template following APA style that is required to be used.

Instructions/Required Elements for Paper:
Introduction (1 points)
Introduce the research topic, selected qualitative study, and purpose of appraisal. End with a thesis sentence telling the reader what the paper will discuss. Write 3-5 concise sentences.
Aim/Purpose/Research Question (2 points)
Did the report formally present a statement of purpose (aim or research question)? Provide a summary of the aim/purpose/research question.
Where is the setting of the study?
Does the study provide background in the article introduction to assist the reader in understanding the phenomena under investigation and the selected design?
Review of Literature (2 points)
Is the review of literature (ROL) organized and clearly support a need for the study?
Does the ROL provide a summary of the literature?
Did the authors provide a critical appraisal of the references included in the ROL?
Research Design (2 points)
What is the type/design of study (grounded theory, phenomenological, historical, or ethnographic)? Describe the design.
Is the qualitative methodology appropriate? 
Did the design minimize threats to the validity of the study?
Was an adequate amount of time spent in the field or with study participants?
Participants and Sample (2 points)
Discuss the participants included (demographics) and method of recruitment.
Provide details regarding the sample:
What is the sample size?
What do you think of that sample size? Was data saturation achieved?
How was the sample selected (random or non-random, convenience, etc.)?
Is the sample representative of the population?
Has the relationship between researchers and participants been adequately considered? Were there any changes made/considered to the study design?
Methods (2 points)
Were the data collected in a way that addressed any potential/actual research issues?
Were specific instruments/methods adequately described?
Who collected the data and how were the data maintained?
Did the report provide information to suggest how long the study took to complete? 
Was potential bias addressed and minimized? 
Have ethical issues been taken into consideration (IRB approval, role of researchers, etc.)?
Results (2 points)
Briefly describe data analysis, findings, and interpretation. 
Are the data clearly presented?
Did the themes adequately capture the meaning of the data using supportive statements/quotes from the participants? 
Were the findings effectively summarized, with good use of excerpts from the data and with strong supporting arguments? How were findings presented?
Summary of Findings/Discussion (3 points)
What were the main phenomena, concepts, or conclusions made?
Does the problem have significance to nursing or the study contribute any meaningful evidence that can be used in nursing practice?
Define dependability, credibility, transferability, and confirmability. Support with at least one reference (other than the article). 
Discuss strategies and provide examples from the study to demonstrate trustworthiness using examples (dependability, credibility, transferability, and confirmability as applicable).
Discuss any limitations the researchers described. 
Conclusion (1 points)
Summarize major points of the paper without including any new information or new references. Should be at least three to five sentences to adequately conclude a paper.
