Write a balanced paper on why the State of Mississippi changed its state flag in 2020.

June 23, 2021
Christopher R. Teeple

A‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍SSIGNMENT: Write a balanced paper on why the State of Mississippi changed its state flag in 2020. The old flag, dating to the 1890s, was the last state flag that featured the Confederate battle flag, located in the upper left corner. ANY OPINIONS WILL RESULT IN 75 % POINT DEDUCTION. This is not about your opinion! What were the reasons for Mississippi changing its flag in 2020, what were the issues that led to the change of a new flag? What was the reaction in Mississippi to the change and to the new state flag? Your paper will be balanced and not emphasize any one point of view. Not Your Opinion. The paper is about what the people of Mississippi thought about changing from the old flag to the new flag. It is not an opinion piece. DO NOT PUT YOUR OPINION IN YOUR PAPER! Opinions are an automatic 75 point deduction. SOURCES: Welcome to college! No encyclopedias, no websites, no children’s books, no atlases, no personal interviews that you conducted, NO JUNIOR SCHOLASTIC MAGAZINE ARTICLES. Use university-level sources – academic journal articles & academic books! The Library has an incredibly large number of resources for students to use to hone their research skills. Learning research skills now will help you throughout your future careers! The Library has access to an amazing number of journals, newspapers, magazines, and other sources. Journals, newspapers, magazines, and other periodicals accessed through the Library’s system on the Internet, such as through Ebscohost, J-Stor, or Project Muse do not count as websites, because they are published periodicals that are simply accessed online. Minimum of 8 good sources! “Minimum” means a maximum grade of C-. Sources used must be cited within the body of the paper, and a proper bibliography must be used. You may use any accepted style of citation, but it must be used correctly. Failure to cite sources within the body of the paper or failure to cite sources correctly is plagiarism. USE MLA STYLE OF CITATIONS. LENGTH OF PAPER: Forget number of pages – go by word count. 1000 word minimum, not counting titles, bibliographies, your name, etc. If you write your paper to simply meet the minimum word count, you will probably write a poor paper. Try to write a good paper, and you will likely come out ahead on the word count. If you do not follow the word count, grading will begin according to the ratio of what you wrote to what you were supposed to write. Example: if write only 500 words, which is 50% of the assignment, then grading will begin at 0, and 50 points will be the maximum possible that could be earned, although with such little written there would be nothing of substance in the paper, and it would be highly unlikely to score anywhere near a 50.. DO NOT INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: – Your Opinion of the Mississippi or Confederate flags or your personal opinion of what they should have done. – Do not include the history of the Confederate flags or discussion of what was the legal flag of the Confederacy or what was the actual Confederate Battle flag. FORMATTING: Failure to format your term paper correctly will result in a loss of points. Correct formatting makes the paper e‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍asier to read. Please follow instructions. 1. USE TIMES NEW ROMAN FONT, SIZE 12. This sentence and the majority of the instructions uses Times New Roman 12. It is an easy to read font that helps with grading. Using other fonts and sizes is a 50 point deduction. – Do not use bold – Do not use italics, except where appropriate, and you will seldom if ever need it. 2. NO QUOTATIONS – Many students rely on quotations to fill up their paper. This is a sign of poor writing. If you use too many quotes, then you are not learning how to write. We want you to learn how to write, so the following rules are for quotations. – NO QUOTATIONS – No Quotations of any length – learn to paraphrase – 25 point deduction for each and every quotation 3. Margins – top, bottom and both side margins are to be set at 1 inch. Note: Microsoft Word sometimes has side margins at inches. Change it. 4. DOUBLE-SPACE YOUR PAPER. This means that there is 1 line between each line of text. 5. INDENT THE FIRST LINE OF ALL PARAGRAPHS. There should be the same 1 line of space separating the beginning line of text in the paragraph from the last line of text of the previous paragraph. 6. DO NOT incorporate photos, graphs, maps or other illustrations within the body of the paper. Put them at the end of the paper, if you are using any. Any graphics are required to have proper citations accompanying them. 7. DO NOT give a history of the development of the Confederate Battle Flag. That is NOT what THIS assignment is about. If you absolutely need to, you may use NO MORE THAN 2 (two) short sentences with a total of less than 50 words on the history of the development of the Confederate Battle Flag. 8. THIS IS NOT AN “OPINION” PAPER based on your opinion. It is a small paper to examine the issues surrounding the Mississippi State flag, why it was changed in 2020, what led to the change, and the reactions to the new state flag. Opinions in the paper will result in a loss of 75 points. 9. USE MLA STYLE FOR CITATIONS WITHIN THE BODY OF THE PAPER AND IN THE BIBLIOGRAPHY. Failure to use citations within the body of the paper is Plagiarism. 10. PLAGIARISM IS CHEATING, and cheating should not be tolerated at Louisiana Tech University. Hence, any cheating on the paper will result in a failing grade of “F” for the ENTIRE course. DEADLINE – All papers must be uploaded to through Moodle. No hard copies or emailed copies are accepted. No later than 12:00 noon, Thursday, May 20. – if you are not in Ruston on that day, turn the paper in early – no extensions for ANY reason – if your hard drive crashes, use your backup from your USB flash drive to complete loading your paper – always have backups of your files – the file you upload is the file that is graded – name your draft files “drafts” and name only the final paper “final” paper – you are graded on the file that you upload – no “I uploaded the wrong file” – if you upload a draft, then you get graded on that file – double-check to make sure you are uploading the correct file NO QUOTATIONS DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR OPINION USE CITATIONS IN THE BODY OF YOUR PAPER, AND INCLUDE A BIBLIOGR‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍APHY PLAGIARIZE AND FAIL THE ENTIRE COURSE
