Who and what is the film about in relation to human diversity?

September 25, 2022
Christopher R. Teeple

Watch the movie Just Mercy (2019, has actor Michael B Jordan as the lead), take notes and produce the following in the paper:
1. (1-2 pages) Who and what is the film about in relation to human diversity?
a. Which film did you choose?
b. Who are the main characters, and what layers of identity are most relevant to the story told in the film?
c. How is diversity appreciated or celebrated?

2. (2-3 pages) Name the systems (at least 3) that are represented/explored in the film. Utilize the Miller and Garran (2007) article to help you identify the systems, but think and apply beyond race to each of the identities/social locations you have chosen to analyze in the book/film. Some
potential questions to consider:
a. What aspects of the systems help and/or hinder certain groups of people (think: oppressive or anti-oppressive policies, practices, etc)?
b. How do the systems influence the daily life of characters in the film?
c. What, if any, evidence of equity and inclusion is depicted?

3. (1 page) Analyze the film through the principles of Critical Race Theory (CRT) or another Critical Theory from our course reading (Abrams & Moio (2009).
4. (1 page) Additionally, identify and explain how at least 3 Mechanisms of Oppression (Pharr) or tenants of White Supremacy Culture (Okun) are depicted in the film.

Do not summarize the film. Instead, focus on the requested academic analysis. Writing about certain events or characters in the film should be directly tied to an explanation of concepts in the course from reading, asynchronous content, and class discussions.
Follow APA guidelines, including a title page, in-text citations, and a reference page. No abstract is required. You must cite readings from your textbook, Readings for Diversity and Social Justice (2018), the Miller and Garran article “The Web of Institutional Racism” (2007), any of the articles in your weekly Readings (see Course Schedule), the film itself, and you may additionally select from other readings from class and/or any other outside sources that support your analysis. The paper should be 5–6 pages in length and should have a minimum of 6 sources total (I am giving you 4 above) on your Reference page, and make sure that all are cited using APA compliant in-text citations in your paper.

I have attached the sources to use for the paper. You will also need to use the following book (not uploaded):

Adams, M., Blumenfeld, W. J., Catalano, D. C. J., DeJong, K., Hackman, H. W., Hopkins, L. E.,
Love, B. J., Peters, M. L., Shlasko, D., & Zúñiga, X. (Eds.). (2018). Readings for diversity and
social justice (4th ed.). New York, NY/London, UK: Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group.
