Last Week Tonight With John Oliver
Exploring Visual Rhetoric
Overview: For this task, you will explore the intersection of rhetoric and a more direct form of argumentation, using John Oliver’s weekly current events show Last Week Tonight. The assignment has two components, the first of which will ask you to identify and describe the various parts of Oliver’s argument about ONE of the below topics, whereas the second part of the task asks you to assess Oliver’s argument in its entirety. Ultimately, this task is meant to bridge the gap from the development of your rhetorical analysis skills and into the toulmin mode of argumentation. Please note, whether we agree or disagree with Oliver is NOT important. We are objective observers that are simply exploring the rhetorical concepts of a text.
Please note that you can open the transcriipt of a YouTube video by pressing the ellipsis next to the “subscribe” button, which allows you to read everything in the video (this saves time for when you’re writing in quotes).
For this assignment, you have a choice of rhetorical arguments to explore. Please watch ONE of the videos based on your interests, and complete the assignment below:
John Oliver Selection
1. “The Next Pandemic” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_v-U3K1sw9U
“Student Debt” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8pjd1QEA0c
“Fashion” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdLf4fihP78
“Standardized Testing” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6lyURyVz7k
“Debt Buyers” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxUAntt1z2c&t=2s
Part One: Rhetorical Analysis Questions (to be completed while watching, or directly after.
1. As you enter the rhetorical situation of Oliver’s text (the video), what seems to be his overall purpose? How do you know?
2. Think about the three appeals as you watch. How does Oliver use ethos, pathos, and logos to further his point?
3. Does Oliver seem biased? Why or why not?
4. What types of evidence does he use? Does this evidence help further his rhetorical purpose (which you answered in #1).
5. How does the medium of the text (aka: a video) impact your reading experience? Since this is a visual text, does it help Oliver further his ideas? How are videos a beneficial tool to persuade?
6. How do the visual components of the text help you understand the topic, help persuade, etc.? What are the effects?
Part Two: Mini-Analysis
1. In a short response of 1-2 paragraphs explain whether you think Oliver has proved his claim, and integrate in specific evidence that he provides. You must then either defend, challenge, or qualify his claims, by taking a stance on the topic (aka: tell me why he is right or wrong, and why). Lastly, explain how you think this argument could be stronger.
