Does the normality of students going to college seem to be putting more people in society into debt that could have been avoided?

June 23, 2021
Christopher R. Teeple

We are going over the normalization of people needing to go to 4-year colleges and waste their time and money. Along with understanding that some people can get a lot out of it, while others can’t. That it’s just a place for the schools to get kids their degrees and make an image for themselves. All in all, there are many alternatives for those who don’t want to go to college, or those who end up going and realize this isn’t it for them. The thesis that I have stated is “Individuals therefore should not be pressed to follow the societal norm for people to simply go to four year Universities, which are more focused on their personal branded names, wasting students time and money when they could have chosen a better option to start with.” And I just really want to be able to base off of that, I have a introduction done already I just need the rest of it. (“ Does the normality of students going to college seem to be putting more people in society into debt that could have been avoided? In the world today, it seems like the overall cost of college is always on a constant rise, while the reward that students receive seems to be dwindling each year. In Hacker and Dreifus article, Are Colleges Worth the Price of Admission, arguments are made about how institutions are not focused on working for the students’ futures because their methods of teaching have not evolved causing them to be centered around making money and not educating their participants. In an additional article Two Years Are Better Than Four, by Liz Addison, Blue-Collar Brilliance, by Mike Rose, claims that society shouldn’t be assuming those who go to college and have attained Blue-collar jobs are smarter than those who have not. He gives an example of his mom who realized college was not the way to go, making a different life choice for herself, and was rewarded greater than she would have been if she had gone to college. Individuals therefore should not be pressed to follow the societal norm for people to simply go to four year Universities, which are more focused on their personal branded names, wasting students time and money when they could have chosen a better option to start with.”) That’s my intro paragraph Sources: Hacker and Dreifus, “Are Colleges Worth the Price of Admission?” Chronicle of Higher Ed, 2010.
