The United States has been the land of opportunities for people across the world, and many foreign nationals are very keen to work in the US to get a boost in their career and quality of life. Hundreds of thousands apply for an H1-B Visa yearly. And the firms in the US fiercely compete to recruit the best talent from abroad.


Based on the debate implied in the videos, do you believe that Americans are losing jobs to foreign nationals? State your views on this with relevant analysis, examples, and research.

After watching the two videos you can look at this situation from two different perspectives from a business and outsider side. The business perspective of it is that businesses like Disney has to pay foreign workers less than the regular I.T workers and it is a great way to expand the talent pool to compete with competitors of national amusement parks like Six flags or Universal Studios. The H1-B Visa is known as the “secret weapon” which is helping the United States control their economy due to many foreign workers working in American helping the economy being stable. The outsider perspective is that no foreign people are not taking jobs away it is America taking the jobs away since the American Education system is failing us as mentioned in Dr. Kaku video. These foreign workers are helping the United States prosper then going back to their country and help them prosper enabling a loop with the H1-B visa which is foreign workers come to the U.S gain experience/help us prosper then go back to their country helping their country which could inspire people to come here and learn. The workers that are being replaced by foreign workers is a business decision because companies could pay less to these foreign workers instead of wasting their budget on more expensive workers possibly increasing the cash flow to the business. You can look at Rutgers there are some international students here getting an education from China or Saudi Arabia would you say these international students are stealing spots from American students. Most likely you would say no since they are here to gain an education similar to the foreign workers they are here to gain experience to help out their country in the future and at the same time they are helping the United States or Rutgers reputation if they perform well.

I believe that the answer to this question is contingent on a case-by-case company scenario rather than summing it up to include the entirety of the workforce. When a company is able to anticipate changing needs or labor shortages, they need to be able to plan accordingly in order to cultivate appropriate talent (PWC,3). Hiring foreign nationals should be reactive and based on filling company needs to support a business growth strategy rather than a method of cutting costs or undermining the current labor supply. In the Disney video, the interviewee mentions that H1-B Visa should be used to bring in workers when there is a lack of qualified Americans. I agree with this in the sense that foreign nationals should be brought in to tap into new opportunities and fulfill a need, but not be used to replace talent at a lower cost. On the other hand, I can see how foreign nationals can be a “secret weapon” that saves the day in reskilling a workforce or helping a labor supply shortage. Overall, I believe that whether you are foreign or American, if you are highly skilled and highly teachable, you are an asset to a business. However, I believe that some of the points that Dr. Michio Kaku made discredit the American workforce and undermine their ability to uphold the economic demand. “Research shows that H-1B workers complement U.S. workers, fill employment gaps in many STEM occupations, and expand job opportunities for all” (American Immigration Council). If foreign nationals are able to fill gaps in industries that need workers and can assist an organization in growth resulting in more job opportunities, then it is a great positive and asset.

I believe Americans are losing jobs to foreigners. Not just because of the H1-B visas, but also companies outsourcing and off shoring to keep labor cost down. I understand to remain competitive these companies must keep labor cost down, but the truth is that Americans are losing their jobs while these corporations are getting richer. I think this is an issue that the government has allowed, and it will just get worse with globalization. Not because globalization is bad, but because the constitution doesn’t protect Americans from losing their jobs. Under the doctrine of employment at will companies don’t need a real reason to fire an employee unless they have an employee contract in a Union which companies barely use anymore. I think there should be government policies put into place where American companies need to have a certain percentage of their workforce be Americans allowing only a certain percentage be foreign. Like that they are allowing companies to keep labor cost down, but they are not leaving citizens jobless which is only hurting the economy with the rising unemployment. In addition, the constitution should be amended corporations are not people they are made out of people, and it should not be legal to fire someone just because someone else can do the job cheaper. There should be some type of protection from the government where there need to be a fair reason for someone to get replaced or fired. As Dr. Kaku stated we need the genius H1-B visas provide so the scientific establishment doesn’t collapse, but they should be an addition to our workforce now our replacements.
