First, I want to discuss a pro of conducting reach on topics like Intimate Partner Violence. At the beginning of Chapter 2 in our textbook, the author introduces a great starting point for our community to understand better why VMIR happens (Miller-Perrin et al., 2018). Without the research that has been conducted, we would not have any understanding or ideas on why VMIR happens, how common it is in our community, and what causes someone to stay in a relationship where IPV occurs. A con of researching topics like IPV is that the data might not always be completely accurate. As stated in Chapter 2, “research on VMIR can never be perfect” (Miller-Perrin et al., 2018). Research regarding VMIR can be complex because this topic can be difficult for people and possibly even personal (Miller-Perrin et al., 2018). For individuals completing research, it is sometimes challenging to balance advocacy and research (Miller-Perrin et al., 2018). One thought that came to mind while reading through the material this week that could improve the process of IPV research is was having long-term generational studies, which was brought up at the end of the chapter (Miller-Perrin et al., 2018). I believe having long-term research studies that look at multiple generations over many years could potentially show important information valuable to the research on VMIR. A barrier with long-term studies would be having someone follow through with this research for multiple years, like Widom in our textbook that followed a group for 50 years (Miller-Perrin et al., 2018).

Discuss the pros and cons of conducting research on complicated social work topics like Intimate Partner Violence.
A pro behind conducting research on such sensitive topics is that it may provide more information and statistics to prove how (likely) ubiquitous IPV is (Miller-Perrin et al, 2021). When there are more wholesome statistics to a problem, then there is sometimes more of a push for social justice if we know how “big the problem is”. In my opinion, there, unfortunately, seems to be more cons to gathering statistics and conducting research on IPV than there are pros. Our text reviews that self-report surveys can become perpetration or victimization surveys (Miller-Perrin et al, 2021). In other words, these self-reports and surveys can re-awaken trauma, which leads to negative results (Miller-Perrin et al, 2021). Or, surveys can feel very accusing, and therefore, the individual(s) taking the survey are not honest (Miller-Perrin et al, 2021).
Based on the readings and lecture, share one idea you have for improving the process or intent of IPV research.
Similar to what is stated prior, research and surveys we have in place now can be more harmful than helpful for both the individual experiencing it and for the wholesome collection of statistics (Miller-Perrin et al, 2021). Though it may be outlandish, it would maybe be beneficial for the research and collection of statistics for IPV to come from professionals such as social workers and police reports. The intention of IPV needs to be more trauma-informed, which can be gone about in multiple ways.
