Describe an example of a product or service that is not web-based.

November 24, 2022
Christopher R. Teeple

please see below 4 prompts for each journal reflections.

1. BEYONG THE SCREEN: We often think of UCD as something that is primarily applied to web-based interfaces. Describe an example of a product or service that is not web-based. This can be something that is more experiential, something that is a physical/embodied product, or something multichannel. What makes it compelling/engaging? Why do you choose to use this service? What could make it better?

2. UC SKETCHING: If you currently sketch, how might you modify your process to engage in more UCD sketching? Or, how would you apply Buxton’s rules for sketching to your current method?
If you do not currently sketch, how might you apply the rules and create your own method to further explore sketching as a skill you develop?
please refer to the buxton’s rules of sketching, attached file.

3. UCD MINDSET ENVIRONMENT: Have you worked in a collaborative environment in the past where an empathic UCD mindset was employed? If so, how was it used and what were the outcomes? Or, think of an example when a UCD mindset might have been applied to achieve better outcomes?

4. COMMUNICATING UCD: the world of human-centered design pulls together many different groups into the process of creation – it’s never just a team of designers making decisions unilaterally (well, sometimes it is, but that doesn’t make it okay).

A good practitioner of UCD works to be able to speak the language of different parties: visual design, interaction design, development and programming, sound, video, motion, business and more. It’s a long list:

What areas do you feel confident communicating within?
Which do you feel the least confident in?
How might you address your lower confidence areas?
